ZION HILL MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH

1928 Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church was organized on July 14, 1928, on South Third Street under the name, Kneeway Missionary Baptist Church. The church moved to Georgia and Wellington Street under the leadership of Rev. C. H. Tappin and Rev. G.A. Coleman.

1932  Rev. C. H. Greer was elected Pastor. Services were held in a shotgun house located on Fourth Street. Under his leadership, the site at 683 South Fourth Street was purchased and the name changed to Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church. During the same year, the Sunday School was organized with two classes. There were 15 choir members, 8 mothers and 7 deacons.

1933 Rev. G. B. Brown was elected Pastor. The membership grew as the Lord saw fit. The Pastor’s Aide and The Mission Society were added to the list of auxiliaries. The site at 683 South Fourth Street was paid for and the mortgage burned. In 1959, Rev. Brown resigned to accept another mission.

1959 Rev. Roy Willie Taylor Auxiliaries were organized: The Willing Workers Club, The Busy Bees, Male Chorus, Junior Ushers, Junior Choir, and a children’s division was added to the Sunday School. Several activities were planned to involve the people in the work of the Lord.   The property at 1468 Leland Street was purchased.

1976  Rev. Alex Hyman, a praying minister, was elected Pastor and carried the flock to greater heights. Under his leadership, the mortgage at 1468 Leland Street was burned and the church was given a face lift.  Pews replaced the theatre choir seats, cushions were added to the sanctuary pews, the carpet changed, and the pulpit was decorated. Two houses next door to the church were purchased. These houses not only provided income but were rented to members of the congregation.

1985  Rev. Donald E. Walker, Sr., an active member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Memphis, was elected to serve as Pastor.  During his administration, ministries replaced auxiliaries and the fruit of our labor was plenteous. “Visualize the Vision” was the 1986 mission as the Lord had given the Pastor the vision of the Taylor-Hyman Fellowship Hall.  After becoming a member of The Memphis District Association, Rev. Walker taught classes and served as President of the Choir.  Rev. Walker implemented programs such as “Miracle Week”, an anointed service with praying, preaching, singing, testifying, and laying on of hands which lasted for seven years and Sacrificial Prayer Week to strengthen the congregation that lasted two years. He also implemented a summer camp in 2003 to provide a safe religious environment for children during the summer.

2008  Rev. Darrell Webster, Sr.,  a member of Zion Hill, was elected to serve as Pastor.  Rev. Webster served faithfully in the church for 8 years under the leadership of Rev. Walker, where he was licensed and ordained. He truly thanked God for the loving and kind members and his prayer was that the Lord helps him to be the kind of leader who serves as a good role model for those he has put under his charge, so that he will more effectively be able to show the way wherein we should walk, and work that we must do. He quotes, “FOLLOW ME AS I FOLLOW CHRIST.”

2014  Mortgage Burning Service was held to burn the mortgage on the Taylor-Hyman Fellowship Hall.

2021  Minister Mae Perkins, an Associate Minister,  was elected as Interim Pastor. Minister Mae was licensed May 28, 2014 and ordained January 12, 2016. She immediately stepped in and carried on the work of the Lord.  Plans are underway for a community outreach, leadership training session, “Keeping It 100” revived, youth and children ministries and other workshops to strengthen the people of God as they work in the vineyard. In three months, two souls have been added to the fellowship.

2024 Pastor Anthony Sledge was installed as Zion Hill’s Pastor on March 10, 2024.
